Nokia to Manage Telenor-Telia Mobile Network

August 24, 2017

Telenor and Telia have called on Nokia (News - Alert) to manage their joint mobile radio network in Denmark and develop it going forward. Nokia’s managed services contract goes into effect in October.

“We have reached a point where we need to take the TT network to a new level, and Nokia will help us do that,” said Peter Nødbak, network director at Telenor (News - Alert) Denmark. “They have the necessary expertise, capacity, and know-how in the area that will ensure the most optimal operation and making our network ready for the future.”

Nokia will do handle network operations, network implementation, and do network planning and optimization for the 4,000-mobile-site network.

The two carriers, which are the largest telecom providers in Scandinavia, announced plans to join forces on the Denmark mobile network in June of 2011. That network converged the 2G, 3G, and 4G assets of Telenor and Telia.

“Both Telia and Telenor have high ambitions in Denmark. However, to achieve these ambitions, we need to do two things successfully: We need to provide a world-class customer experience. And we need to secure the scale of our network to ensure that it is also profitable to do business in Denmark in the long term. By sharing networks, we are taking a giant and strategically important step on both fronts, making us even better prepared to face the competition,” Jon Erik Haug and Søren Abildgaard said seven years ago when the companies announced the joint initiative.

And now these companies have called on Nokia to take yet another important step with their mobile network. “This will expand network capacity, ensure a quality boost in the customer experience, and pave the way for the introduction of new technologies,” according to a press release Nokia issued Aug. 22 about the managed service deal.

“Today we have a world-class mobile network, and this step to have Nokia manage it for us will ensure we also have the best network in five or 10 years,” commented Telia Denmark CTO Henrik Kofod.
