According to the New Hampshire Business Review, Senator Maggie Hassan has officially boarded the 5G bandwagon. Recently, the senator joined Senators Roger Wicker from Mississippi and Brian Schatz of Hawaii in introducing a bipartisan resolution that’s aim is to support deploying 5G mobile broadband technology across the U.S.
5G is set to be deployed in 2019. This timeline will give major players the chance to develop their solutions and put official standards in place to define the scope of the technology. According to the article from NH Business Review, “Potential benefits of the deployment of 5G networks include three million new jobs, a $275 billion investment from the wireless industry and a boost of $500 billion to the economy.”
The article also points out that 5G would provide consumers in both rural and urban areas with greater access to technologies. Precision agriculture, telemedicine and other Internet-connected applications and services all depend on fast, reliable broadband connections. At the moment, certain areas in the U.S. don’t have that kind of broadband at their fingertips. And, ironically, those are the areas that need innovations like telemedicine the most.
“Access to the internet is vital in today’s 21st century economy,” said Senate Hassan when referencing the bipartisan 5G Resolution. “As the importance of internet access increases, the digital divide between urban and rural areas is widening, putting those living in rural areas at a disadvantage. This bipartisan resolution emphasizes the importance of making life-changing technology more accessible and fostering the spirit of innovation in hard-working Granite Staters and Americans.”
Only time will tell how 5G truly turns out but, from the looks of it, it’s bound to bring immense benefits across the U.S., no matter where you live.
