Next Generation Communications Week in Review: Nokia, PCWA, WorldLink, GlobalData

July 15, 2017

By Alicia Young - Web Editor

Welcome back to the week in review, where we take a look at all the top stories making headlines on the Next Generation Communications community this week.

The week started off with a few pieces of exciting Nokia (News - Alert) news. First, the company announced that it is teaming up with WorldLink to build Nepal’s first 100G optical network for super-fast broadband services. These services will be beneficial to consumers and businesses alike, and should serve to improve operations in Nepal immensely. Full coverage is HERE.

Next, Nokia stated that it will be providing an advanced communications network to the Placer County Water Agency (PCWA) in Northern California to support its hydro-electric power generation and water distribution services in the area. Nokia will replace PCWA's aging communications infrastructure with a modern Internet Protocol/Multi-protocol Label Switching (IP/MPLS) and packet microwave network. Everything you need to know is HERE.

In other news, the U.K. government is dedicating 16 million pounds to a 5G test network in an attempt to become leaders in the space. For this test network, the government is turning to some of the brightest minds in the area. As Paula Bernier (News - Alert) writes, “The 5G trial network is being developed by experts from King’s College London, the University of Bristol, and the University of Surrey. It will consist of three small-scale mobile networks, which will be located at each of the academic institutions.” Find out more HERE.

Finally, the week rounded out with some predictions from GlobalData about the future of 5G. The U.K.-based consulting and research firm expects 5G networks to be mainstream by 2020 and believes that Asia and the U.S. will be the first to get there. Everything you need to know is HERE.
