Next Generation Communications Week in Review

August 24, 2013

By Peter Bernstein - Senior Editor

The Next Generation Communications Community saw a lot of industry reports (including those posted on related TMC sites) this week along with some interesting features on vertical industry infrastructure needs, optical networking and data plans. We also have the final part in Rich Crowe’s terrific eight-part series on the six degrees of data plan innovation.

Here is a brief list of all the studies you might wish to review:

  • Good times are forecasted for the optical hardware market in North America by market research firm Infonetics Research (News - Alert).
  • EE revealed its first Mobile Index on how UK customers are using 4G.
  • ABI Research (News - Alert) forecast that the Mobile Security Management (MSM) market will grow to over $1 billion by 2015.
  • Speaking about security, the European Network and Information Security Agency (ENISA) released its 2012 Incident Report, and McAfee Labs is out with their Q2 mobile threat report which is worth downloading.

As the industry is gearing up for a slew of product and service announcements as event season kicks into high gear starting with our own ITEXPO and associated conferences next week, it was also noteworthy that Neotel (News - Alert) won the 2013 South African Frost & Sullivan Award for New Product Innovation.

Features

Our featured items as always reflect the diversity of the community. Mae Kowalke, who writes frequently for the community, had three interesting pieces, which included:

  • How reliant railway systems around the world are becoming on next generation communications infrastructure for smooth and efficient railway operations and improved passenger experiences.
  • Why NORDUnet, the broadband network Norwegian universities use, turned to Alcatel-Lucent’s Agile (News - Alert) Optical Networking to meet current and future needs of demanding users.
  • An explanation of SurePay and how it is enablingmobile service providers to meet price plan needs for dynamic marketplace.

From the Blogs

I would be remiss if I did not put special emphasis on the last of the blogs by Rich Crow on his deep dive into the six degrees of mobile data plans. Entitled, “Coming soon to a Mobile Operator NEAR YOU: The  Six Degrees of Moible Data Plan Innovation,” this is not just a summary but contains lots of useful news insights and links to valuable resources.

Weekend Reading

For your weekend and end of the summer relaxation period reading, take a look at two  Alcatel-Lucent (News - Alert) TechZone articles:

  • The Numbers are in: Vectoring 2.0 Makes G.fast Faster
  • How To Deliver VoLTE With Scalability And High Performance

In addition, the Resource Center has lots of new whitepapers, videos and case studies. Plus, click on the links to Alcatel-Lucent’s ezines:  GRIDTalk, TRACKTALK and LIFETALK, which are rich in content about important market sectors. Finally, our WebRTC World site is a terrific resource for the latest news and insights on what is one of the hottest topics in the industry.
