2012 was second year in a row that Alcatel-Lucent (News - Alert) was named a Top 100 Global Innovator for its achievements as one of the world's 100 most innovative organizations through a proprietary program.
The Thomson Reuters (News - Alert) Top 100 Global Innovator companies are world leaders of innovation and economic growth.
Thomson Reuters annually selects what it considers to be the world's most innovative companies or research institutes based on analyses of its own patent database. The 100 companies and research institutes honored are recognized as 'top global innovators' for their strategic protection of intellectual property rights, and their aggressive pursuit of the commercialization of valuable inventions capable of having a significant impact on the global market.
Alcatel-Lucent was recognized for worldwide innovation leadership in the communications sector and cited for the relative value, influence of its patent portfolio, global reach of the portfolio and patent influence, as evidenced by citations from other companies related to their own inventions.
Curiously, as the New York Times pointed out, there’s not a single Chinese company in the list!
“We welcome this recognition of our commitment to innovation, and of our continual effort to augment our patent portfolio with important breakthroughs,” said Ben Verwaayen (News - Alert), chief executive officer at Alcatel-Lucent. “Alcatel-Lucent’s devotion to innovation is far more than a component of our strategy - it is the foundation of everything that we do.”
Alcatel-Lucent’s has one of the largest portfolios in the telecom industry with over 45,000 patent assets, including more than 30,000 issued patents and some 15,000 applications. The patents cover a wide range of technologies, including fixed line and wireless communications, semiconductors, consumer electronics, multimedia, optical, software, cloud computing, applications and network security.
“There are many ways to measure innovation,” Thomson Reuters added. “We believe that our peer-reviewed methodology is unique in its unbiased approach, using the best data currently available to measure both the breadth and influence of corporate innovation.”
“Innovation is the foundation for economic prosperity and technological advancement,” said David Brown (News - Alert), managing director, Thomson Reuters IP Solutions. “We salute and congratulate these Top 100 companies and their leaders for their innovative spirit that they foster and their commitment to protecting intellectual assets.”
