Telecom equipment maker Alcatel-Lucent’s (News
- Alert) gigabit passive optical network (GPON) business is doing very well. As per the analysts, Alcatel-Lucent has reported a record shipment of GPON ports in the second quarter (Q2) 2012.
Driven by rapid expansion of GPON ports in China and the U.S., the company shipped more than one million GPON ports in Q2. Both the research firms confirm that Alcatel-Lucent is the only GPON vendor with a leading position in all four regions.
The study shows that in APAC, Alcatel-Lucent has made significant progress in the Chinese market, where the company is the number one supplier of GPON gear to China Telecom and China Unicom (News

Similarly, in the Americas, Alcatel-Lucent is supplying GPON ports to largest service providers, such as Oi (Brazil), Telmex (Mexico), and Verizon (US).
While in Europe, the manufacturer leads in terms of GPON deployments with Western European operators, and has now started to expand its business in Eastern Europe as well. The recent contract win with Vivacom in Bulgaria clearly represents this trend.
Finally, in the Middle East and Africa, the study suggests that Alcatel-Lucent has been actively working on the development of new fiber business, which resulted in winning Telkom South Africa contract last quarter.
According to Alcatel-Lucent, the company’s ongoing success in the GPON market builds on its award-winning Intelligent Services Access Manager (ISAM)-based GPON solution, a key building block of the company’s High Leverage Network (HLN). HLN has been deployed by more than 250 service providers around the world, and includes more than 160 FTTH projects.
In a statement, Alcatel-Lucent’s head of Fixed Access activities Dave Geary stated, “It is exciting to see that our innovative, market-leading FTTH solutions are resonating with our customers, which is evidenced by the fact that we are growing faster than the market. The combination of recent wins with service providers around the world and renewed orders from existing customers shows that the industry appreciates our continued commitment to fiber-based access.”
