How Can an IP Network Management Tool Unify a Multi-Vendor/Multi-Technology Environment?

By Susan J. Campbell, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Within the IP network, it is common for the IT manager to be faced with the challenge of handling a variety of vendors and multiple technologies. Such variety is needed to effectively transport voice, data and video traffic. The performance and availability of the network is critical to the success of the organization. With the right IP network management tools in place, the disparate environment can be unified for optimal performance.

The importance of this unification is highlighted in the importance of reducing downtime across the organization. Enterprise Management Associates estimate that the average organization must deal with 61 hours of downtime each year, which translates into 99.3 percent uptime. Downtime costs can vary, but industry analysts estimate the range to be between $50,000 and $1 million per hour.

An important element in improving downtime is to ensure it never happens. To accomplish this goal, the operator must proactively monitor and management network and application performance. To do so, they need visibility into the entire network at the same time, across all devices, vendors and geographies. Such visibility needs to be available from one single tool.Alcatel-Lucent (News - Alert) understands this challenge and offers the VitalSuite as the single tool necessary to unify the environment.

The VitalSuite is designed to help the organization to optimize network performance through the provision of a comprehensive solution that will monitor the entire network infrastructure from a single, consistent and easy-to-understand user interface. This tool will deliver end-to-end, Web-based visibility into geographically dispersed, multi-vendor and multi-technology converged infrastructures to provide both historical and near real-time views. IT managers can monitor anything from contact center transactions to mission critical network resources that can’t afford to ever be down.

The carrier-grade scalability of the VitalSuite ensures the IT manager has support for millions of performance-monitored objects to make the monitoring, analyzing and predicting of performance easy from one single location. As a result, the organization can more easily and effectively analyze the potential impact of any new application or service before it is added across the enterprise.

The Alcatel-Lucent VitalSuite Real-Time Event Analysis offers up-to-the-minute event correlation and advanced thresholding. The Application Performance Management module ensures the optimal experience for the end user. And, the Advanced Reporting module allows for customized reporting to promote effective network planning that ensures network resources are optimized. Alcatel-Lucent has the expertise and experience to understand the challenges IT managers face in a multi-vendor/multi-technology environment. They used this experience and knowledge to develop a tool to maximize the experience for ultimate performance.
