Shaw Communications Chooses Nokia Siemens Networks

By Deepika Mala, TMCnet Contributor

To provide the radio access network and core equipment for Shaw's next generation wireless network, Shaw Communications (News - Alert) has selected Nokia Siemens Networks.

It was only after an extensive and competitive review process that NSN won the business.

NSN has considerable experience in deploying state-of-the-art wireless networks in Canada. Also, it has been tagged as a world leader in developing Third Generation and Long Term Evolution technology.

Being fully 3G and LTE (News - Alert) capable, the equipment from NSN will give Shaw a variety of options to deliver broadband wireless services to customers using the Advanced Wireless Services band, as well as future frequency bands.

To enable the full potential of high-speed mobile applications to customers, Shaw's wireless network will be fully integrated into our extensive fibre optic network.

A diversified communications company, Shaw Communications Inc. has carved a niche in providing broadband cable television, High-Speed Internet, Digital Phone (News - Alert), telecommunications services and satellite direct-to-home services. The company caters to the need of around 3.4 million customers, including over 1.7 million Internet and 950,000 Digital Phone customers, through a reliable and extensive network, which comprises 625,000 kilometres of fibre.

In related news, it has been announced by Shaw Communications Inc. that the Ontario Superior Court of Justice approved the previously announced agreements with Shaw and members of the ad hoc committee of holders of Canwest Media Inc.'s 8.0 percent senior subordinated notes regarding Shaw's acquisition of Canwest Global Communications Corp. broadcasting assets.
