SATIMO Offers Innovative MIMO Test Systems to Laboratories

By Rajani Baburajan, TMCnet Contributor

SATIMO, which provides dedicated measurement solutions to measure antenna performance, personal exposure level to EMF, announced the launch of new systems that offer laboratories effective solutions to test the influence of Multiple Input/ Multiple Output or "MIMO" signals on the performance of wireless devices.

The increasing use of multiple antennas in single equipment necessitates MIMO device testing, according to company officials.

With the evolution of 4G technologies like Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access or "WiMAX (News - Alert)" and Long Term Evolution or "LTE," operators are keen to add a variety of functionality and improved connectivity for wireless network and devices.

To secure the connection and ensure higher rates, manufacturers in the Telecom sector now use MIMO technology, SATIMO (News - Alert) said.

MIMO technology integrates several antennas in an emitter (base station) or receiver (wireless communication device). As a result, laboratory testing of this technology raises complex challenges.

Company officials added that in a real environment, either indoor or outdoor, a signal emitted by an antenna reflects off surrounding obstacles to form several signals. To measure the performance of a MIMO antenna system, the various environmental influences on a signal must be taken into account by modeling the direct signals, reflected signals (multipath), and any interfering signals (coming from competing emitters).

A MIMO system must therefore simulate different electromagnetic environments in order to evaluate and optimize the performance of mobile devices in real operational conditions, they added.

With expertise in multi-probe technology, SATIMO has developed a family of MIMO test systems that meet these technical requirements. The system is based on the use of an arch that integrates many probes and an instantaneous calibration unit to speed up the measurement time.

With these new systems, SATIMO, which has established its presence in the antenna measurement market, strengthens its position in the Telecom sector too, according to company officials.

Earlier in March SATIMO announced the launch of new generation of portable dosimeters with the EME Spy 140. This dosimeter measures human exposure to electromagnetic fields up to 6 GHz, covering new high frequency applications.
