Mindspeed Debuts Two New Transcede Wireless Baseband Processors
By Shamila Janakiraman, TMCnet Contributor
Mindspeed Technologies, Inc.a supplier of semiconductor solutions for network infrastructure applications announced the inclusion of two new Transcede-based wireless baseband processors to its product portfolio.
According to company sources the new additions will further extend the use of Mindspeed's family of integrated system-on-chip or SoC devices on all base station platforms for mobile networks encompassing picocells and enterprise femtocells and even large macrocell implementations.
Mindspeed's expanded 3G/4G/long-term evolution or LTE (News - Alert) processor family includes the Transcede 3000, which is designed for small-cell 3G and 4G base stations for supporting up to 32 users. The Transcede 4005, which is designed for 3G and 4G macrocell developers combines high-performance Layer 1 physical-layer or PHY processing capabilities with an existing Layer Two or L2 media access control or MAC processing solution.
Also the other Transcede processors combine L1 PHY and L2 MAC functionality on the same device to deliver the lowest possible system latency, said company sources.
Alan Taylor, marketing director for Mindspeed's multiservice access business unit said in a release, "Next-generation 3G/4G/LTE mobile networks will require many different equipment platforms, from picocells and enterprise femtocells that might only support a handful of subscribers, to large macrocells capable of serving hundreds or even thousands of subscribers."
"We have addressed this challenge with a comprehensive family of Transcede devices that enable designers to leverage a common software architecture and programming model so they can speed and simplify the development of a wide variety of platforms. Our two, compelling new application-specific SoCs serve two distinct new performance points for small picocells/enterprise femto and large macrocells," Taylor added.
Transcede family devices feature a highly integrated solution including latest Cortex A9 multi-core symmetric multiprocessing or SMP reduced instruction set computer or RISC processors from ARM (News - Alert). This is coupled with digital signal processors from CEVA. API-Compatible Platform and Performance Scalability ensures that software developed on one Transcede device can be ported to other family members including the full range of system platforms, like enterprise femtocell, picocell, microcell and macrocell base stations.
Green Power Managementis made possible as the Transcede processing cores are optimized for power efficiency and very useful in wireless handset applications. The built-in power management capabilities reduce time taken for processing operations thereby reducing power consumption during low-traffic periods, said company sources.
Mindspeed Technologies (News - Alert) designs, develops and sells semiconductor solutions for communications applications in the wireline and wireless network infrastructure including interrelated and converging enterprise, broadband access, metropolitan and wide area networks. The company's products serve multiservice access, high-performance analog and wide area networking communications. They are used in network infrastructure equipment, including voice and media gateways, high-speed routers, switches, access multiplexers and many others.
