Providing a new era of wireless network services to the residents of Navajo Nation, Atlantic Tele-Network, a subsidiary Commnet Wireless LLC, will develop and operate a 4G Long Term Evolution wireless network in that area.
The 4G Long Term Evolution increases the capacity and speed of mobile telephone networks. The next-generation mobile broadband gets a superior user experience and simplified technology with Long Term Evolution.
Navajo Tribal Utility Authority received a $32.1 million federal stimulus grant on March 25, by the National Telecommunications & Information Administration. The grant, along with partial matching funds, will provide broadband infrastructure access to the Navajo Nation across Arizona, New Mexico and Utah. To provide last mile services through the company's 4G LTE (News - Alert) network, Commnet Wireless is partnering with NTUA as part of the project.
"We are excited to partner with NTUA and contribute our expertise in delivering affordable broadband wireless networks to underserved areas," said Lou Tomasetti, CEO of Commnet Wireless. "The telecom landscape in rural America has changed in dramatic fashion in the last few years, and Commnet has been proud to be part of those changes. The proliferation of internet and wireless technologies is vital for rural America"
More than 30,000 households, approximately 135,000 people, and 1,000 businesses in 15 of the largest communities in the Navajo Nation will get fixed and mobile service through this 4G LTE project. These areas include Window Rock, Shiprock, Kayenta, Chinle, and Tuba City. Also, an additional 49 tribal communities will get high capacity connectivity on the combined middle-mile backbone with this project.
Recently, the company partnered with ZTE (News - Alert) Corporation to help provide high speed broadband access and wireless connectivity to the largest rural network in the U.S. As part of the technical trial-implementation, Commnet Wireless will build an LTE network spanning parts of Arizona, New Mexico and Utah leveraging ZTE's core dual-mode CDMA/LTE platform to meet the service requirements of roaming subscribers.
