GlobeNet Leverages Alcatel-Lucent's Submarine Technology for Up Gradation of Submarine Network Linking the Americas

By Jayashree Adkoli, TMCnet Contributor

Alcatel-Lucent, together with Oi’s subsidiary GlobeNet, announced the completion of an up gradation of the 22,000 kilometer submarine cable system that links the United States with Latin America.

According to a press release, the latest up gradation project is the second upgrade in approximately 18 months and facilitates GlobeNet to deliver an additional 110 Gbit/s of capacity per fiber pair. With this, GlobeNet will have the capacity to carry as many as 13.75 million of voice calls at a time.

GlobeNet offers International capacity between North and South America over the advanced submarine fiber optic cable system connecting Brazil, Bermuda, the U.S.A., and Venezuela. The company’s sophisticated submarine cable network system, which spans over 22,000 kilometers, is fully redundant and offers the lowest latency available between the Americas.

In addition, GlobeNet’s network links cable landing stations in Tuckerton, New Jersey and Boca Raton, FL, USA, with cable landing stations in Fortaleza (Brazil) and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, St. David’s, Bermuda as well as Maiquetía (Caracas) Venezuela.

By leveraging advance submarine technology from Alcatel-Lucent (News - Alert), GlobeNet could expand its wholesale service offerings to include broadband, carrier Ethernet, fixed and mobile IP-based and traditional voice services as well as applications including hosting, video conferencing and international private line services. With this, GlobeNet’s customers can now benefit from enhanced connectivity and reliability as well as faster access to applications and services.

As part of this project, Alcatel-Lucent also managed the installation, deployment and commissioning of its system.

According to officials with Alcatel-Lucent, the company helped in upgrading the landing points in Rio de Janeiro and Fortaleza (Brazil), Maiquetía (Venezuela), St.David’s (Bermuda), Boca Raton and Tuckerton, N.J. The company also upgraded the submarine sections. The submarine network in Rio de Janeiro integrates with the terrestrial optical infrastructure of Oi.

“GlobeNet’s commitment is to enhance the capacity and capabilities of the network to serve our customers even better with new reliable services, while leveraging the investment made in our existing infrastructure,” said Eric Contag, chief operating officer, GlobeNet. “Alcatel-Lucent continues to be a valued partner, helping us further innovate and expand our global capabilities while respecting our tight schedule requirements.”
