SingTel Group Selects Alcatel-Lucent for LTE trial

By Anil Sharma, TMCnet Contributor

Singapore Telecommunications Limited, or “SingTel (News - Alert),” Group, a communications group providing a portfolio of services including voice and data solutions over fixed, wireless and Internet platforms as well as infocomm technology and pay TV,  has selected Alcatel-Lucent as one of the vendors for its Long Term Evolution, or “LTE (News - Alert),” trial, which will begin in the first half 2010.

The trial is expected to jump-start deployment of 4G LTE networks for the SingTel Group, Asia’s leading telecommunications operator with a regional mobile-user base of more than 273 million.

LTE is a new wireless broadband technology that delivers significantly faster data speeds with the potential of several 100s Mbps downstream and several 10s Mbps upstream with reduced latency, allowing end users to access more complex content at faster speeds, global roaming, and improved efficiencies.

Alcatel-Lucent (News - Alert) officials said that the company will be leveraging its LTE expertise to provide an end-to-end solution including the radio access network, the Evolved Packet Core, IP service routing network elements as well as operation, administration and maintenance systems.

The company officials said that Alcatel-Lucent will also provide professional services including project management, planning, installation & commissioning, integration and test plan execution.

“This technical trial is a strong endorsement of Alcatel-Lucent’s innovation and forward-looking capabilities as we work closely with the SingTel Group to support its network transformation and LTE strategy,” Sean Dolan, head of Alcatel-Lucent’s activities in Asia-Pacific, said.

Dolan said that the company’s solution is further proving its readiness to meet the challenges of current and future network requirements, which enable users to consume more complex content at faster speeds.

Recently, Alcatel-Lucent was selected by Aljeel Aljadeed for Technology, a subsidiary of Libyan Post Telecommunications & Information Technology Company in Libya, to deploy its IP-Multi- Protocol Label Switching, or “MPLS,” backbone across the eastern part of the country.

With the contract in place, Aljeel Aljadeed for Technology would now be able to deliver advanced broadband services with superior quality to its residential and corporate subscribers.

Alcatel-Lucent officials said that under the terms of this multi-million dollar European contract, the company will provide Aljeel Aljadeed for Technology with a comprehensive set of services including design, consulting, project management, installation, commissioning, integration, on-site technical assistance and training.
