Alcatel-Lucent's Remote Patient Monitoring Solution Gets Approval from FDA

By Rajani Baburajan, TMCnet Contributor

Alcatel-Lucent announced that its remote patient monitoring system, the Alcatel-Lucent (News - Alert) TeleHealth Manager, has been cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for marketing in the United States.

TeleHealth Manager focuses on enabling “patient-centric healthcare through technology,” said Alcatel-Lucent officials. TeleHealth Manager is an easily deployable solution for standard mobile phones from leading vendors, according to Alcatel-Lucent. It allows patients to provide health data using devices they’re already familiar with (e.g., mobile phones and medical devices such as blood glucose meters), company officials said.

The system can also be used to provide reminders, alerts and online reports to help patients and their healthcare professionals better understand and manage their conditions.

Alcatel-Lucent TeleHealth Manager helps patients to provide health information in a secure and cost-effective manner, without having to expose to other diseases that unnecessary clinical visits might entail.

The solution is especially relevant to an aging population, as well as patients suffering from chronic diseases such as diabetes and hypertension. It offers an efficient and accurate way for care providers to regularly gather potentially lifesaving data.

The rising cost of healthcare services has been another reason behind such innovations, said Alcatel-Lucent officials. Technologies like TeleHealth Manager supplement face-to-face care, without the expense of personal visits to a physician.

“With the FDA clearance to market this cutting-edge solution in the United States, clinicians and patients will be able to better work together to monitor and manage certain chronic diseases,” said Tom Burns, head of Alcatel-Lucent’s enterprise and verticals business, in a statement.

With the TeleHealth Manager solution, Alcatel-Lucent has taken advantage of its strong relationships with telecom service providers and healthcare organizations, and its global expertise in fixed and mobile telephony.

The solution can be deployed with minimal capital investment and can be hosted by a telecom service provider, a healthcare organization or offered as a managed service by Alcatel-Lucent.
