Welcome back to the week in review, where we take a look at all the top stories making headlines on the Next Generation Communications community this week.
The week started off with the news that mobile technology solutions provider InterDigital (News - Alert) Inc. has joined 5TONIC, which is described as Spain’s first 5G laboratory. “5TONIC's mission is to help define 5G application scenarios and provide lab capabilities to outline suitable 5G infrastructure,” the organization explains. “The laboratory will operate at least until the first 5G products are commercially viable, which is expected to happen approximately in 2020.” You can continue reading HERE.
On the other end of the spectrum, 5G deployment plans aren’t looking too good in Nicaragua. A new report from MarketResearchReports.biz says, “Nicaragua continues to exhibit one the lowest fixed line penetration rates in the region, substantially below the Latin American average.” Broadband penetration there was 4.4 percent at the end of 2016 – vs. 12.4 percent for Latin America. According to TMC’s (News - Alert) Paula Bernier, that’s due in large part to the lack of fixed telecom infrastructure investment over the years, according to the research group. Bernier’s full coverage of the situation is HERE.
Meanwhile, Verizon (News - Alert) took a step back from 5G this week to focus on bringing its 4G technology to gigabit-level speeds. It all happened in Boca Raton, Fla. There, Verizon said, the carrier and its partners hit peak speeds of 953 megabits per second. Find out how the companies accomplished this feat HERE.
Finally, the week rounded out with the news that Nokia Bell Labs (News - Alert) and some of its partners plan to build a 5G platform-as-a-service that brings together the big data, Internet of Things, machine learning, robotic, and video applications needed to create 5G-enabled networks. The Next Generation Platform-as-a-Service will enable and encourage collaboration between 5G ecosystem players, Nokia (News - Alert) explained. Everything you need to know is HERE.
There’s plenty more to read about over on the Next Generation Communications community. Be sure to check out the other articles, and come back next week to read all the latest news.
