In an effort to expand overseas, Nokia (News - Alert) is planning on launching a special unit to support major domestic Web-scale players. These plans became reality late last week when Nokia Chairman Risto Siilasmaa met with high-ranking Chinese authorities in order to discuss the plans and Nokia’s future within the country.
The Web-scale support team, which will be part of Nokia's strategy organization and led by Chief Strategy Officer Kathrin Buvac, aims to support and accelerate the international expansion of large-scale Chinese Internet firms. The unit will focus on areas such as data centers, cloud, IP routing, transport and services.
Nokia, which is quickly becoming known for its involvement in basically everything, will also provide insights into growing technologies. These technologies rising in popularity will include edge cloud, artificial intelligence and machine learning, all of which Nokia knows a great deal about.
This is just another step in the right direction for Nokia. The telecom giant is working to get its fingers in as many pies as possible these days, involving itself in everything from VR digital disruption in healthcare to digital health products to 5G. The company even recently released a revolutionary new marketing campaign for its digital health products, which showcased a whole new way to use VR.
So, it should come as no surprise that this is its next endeavor. As the announcement points out, “The creation of the unit supports Nokia's strategy of expanding its business beyond its core communication service provider market. It comes on the heels of the start of operations of the Nokia Shanghai Bell joint venture in China, and underlines Nokia's decades-long commitment to China and to supporting Chinese economic growth.”
