Given the amount of activity in the Next Generation Communications Community this past week, especially regarding community host Alcatel-Lucent (News - Alert) (ALU), for those of us in the Northern Hemisphere you would have thought Spring had already sprung.
In fact, the Alcatel-Lucent news items are a good place to begin the review. Developments included recognition for market leadership in the bustling Optical Transport Network (OTN) and packet optical network market by research firm Infonetics (News - Alert), as well as the research firms’ high ranking in the hot mobile backhaul market. Plus, the ALU scored as nice win with Indonesia’s dominant carried Telkom Akses who will be using ALU’s broad portfolio of FTTx technology to accelerate the deployment of ultra-broad to a much large percentage of the world’s third most populace countries consumer and businesses in the next few years.
In other industry news it was announced that ADVA (News - Alert) Optical Networking SE will acquire Oscilloquartz SA from Swatch Group with closing expected in early April 2014. And, Etisalat (News - Alert) has deployed Sandvine's entire business intelligence product suite, which comprises fairshare traffic classification technology, network analytics, network demographics, and record generator, as well as network protection and usage management solutions in order to cover its fixed and mobile networks, including FTTH and LTE (News - Alert).
In the features section this week ultra-broadband in all of its various forms and the need for next generation virtualization and service management capabilities took center stage. Items featured included:
- A look at why when it comes to ultra-broadband deployments on fixed line networks one solution does not fit all and a mix of technologies is need to assure service providers can be fast to market and nimble in it.
- The explosive and inexorable growth of traffic, along with its unpredictability, has placed a sense of urgency on service providers need to move to a next generation metro core.
- In fact, getting the core of the next right was also the focus on an interesting item on how LTE is making getting the IP Mobile Core correct as a key to future success.
- And, with an eye toward what the future should look like, TMCnet Contributor Mae Kowalke took a look at how ALU’s CloudBand is demonstrating the value of an effective Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) platform.
