Alcatel-Lucent (News - Alert) is providing Telenet, Belgium’s cable broadband provider, with what the company claims to be the world’s most powerful IP core router to meet exploding video and data demand throughout Belgium.
Officials with Alcatel-Lucent said that the 7950 Extensible Routing System (XRS) portfolio is a suite of powerful core routing platforms that delivers unmatched scale, efficiency and versatility without compromising flexibility. The portfolio revolutionizes the economics of delivering the Internet by offering 5 times the density of existing alternatives while consuming only one-third the electricity. With up to 80 100GigE ports in a single rack the 7950 XRS shatters current density norms.
This unrivaled density and superior efficiency enables service providers to expand core network capacity for video, cloud-based applications and immersive multimedia delivered across an array of devices, while simultaneously reducing the cost of precious assets like space and power.
Company officials pointed out that on only one platform service providers can meet all core routing, MPLS switching, data center interconnection and infrastructure service needs in metro cores and IP backbones for years to come – with maximum efficiency and lowest TCO.
According to company officials, the 7950 XRS will prepare Telenet for the next decade of demand-growth from both residential and enterprise customers, supporting the explosion of video traffic created by high definition content, on-demand viewing and multi-screen delivery the widespread use of smart-phones and tablets, and the rapid adoption of ‘cloud’ applications.
“Our customers are looking for high-quality experiences that are personalized, instantaneously shared and can be virtually stored and conveniently accessed anytime, anywhere and on any device. To do this we knew we needed a core network that could handle the massively increasing load from bandwidth hungry services and applications being used by our customers,” said Bert Pelgrims, manager of network and data services engineering at Telenet.
Pelgrims said that the company chose Alcatel-Lucent because the 7950 XRS is field-proven to provide the experiences the company’s customers have come to expect and deserve.
“We have a long-standing relationship with Telenet when it comes to our IP routers,” said Luis Martinez Amago, president of Alcatel-Lucent – Europe, Middle East and Africa.
Amago said that Telenet was the first customer worldwide to deploy the company’s ground-breaking 7750 Service Router and it is once again placing trust and confidence in the innovative technology by deploying the company’s core routing system to increase the capacity of their network.
