Today China Mobile and Alcatel-Lucent publicly announced the selection of Alcatel-Lucent’s innovative lightRadio 4G TD-LTE (News - Alert) overlay. This decision was made for their nationwide rollout of the world’s largest high-speed mobile broadband network.
China is the world’s largest market for mobile data services and smartphones. The country has increased at a rate of over 50 percent each year.
For more than three years now, China Mobile (News - Alert) has actively carried out large-scale TD-LTE live network trials. Presently, the company is scaling the deployments and plans to deploy more than 207,000 TDE-LTE base stations across China by the end of this year.
According to Alcatel-Lucent’s (News - Alert) website, "Alcatel-Lucent's 4G TD-LTE technology provides high quality wireless data coverage, which is helping China Mobile significantly improve mobile broadband service to their customers in an extremely cost-efficient way."
China's Mobile's network has over 750 million subscribers. Those numbers account for more than 60 percent of the country's mobile subscriptions. This latest deployment will help China Mobile meet the growing demand for mobile Internet, video and data in the world’s largest smartphone market.
This contract is a major victory for Alcatel-Lucent as it supports the ultra-broadband strategy in the recently announced “Shift Plan.”
Alcatel-Lucent’s website states, "Alcatel-Lucent has established a strong global leadership position in LTE with more than 40 contracts for commercial deployments. Alcatel-Lucent has been closely involved with China Mobile in developing TD-LTE from the inception of the technology, and successfully demonstrated the first call using the platform more than five years ago, demonstrating HD video delivery over it three years ago. Alcatel-Lucent also showcased TD-LTE to the world during the Shanghai World Expo, another highlight in the journey of TD-LTE from prospect to reality."
CEO of Alcatel-Lucent, Michael Combes, told the media, “This is an extremely significant win for Alcatel-Lucent and we look forward to helping China Mobile rapidly deploy the largest mobile broadband network in the world. By leveraging the ultra-broadband capabilities of our innovative TD-LTE lightRadio solution, China Mobile will have the ability to greatly expand mobile broadband coverage with a consistent, high quality subscriber experience, including challenging environments such as inside commercial and residential buildings.”
Alcatel-Lucent had revenues of €14.4 billion back in 2012. It is listed on both Paris and New York's stock exchanges, and is headquartered in Paris, France.
