SK Broadband, a subsidiary of SK Telecom (News - Alert), one of South Korea's largest broadband service providers, has selected Alcatel-Lucent to build South Korea's first packet transport network to support Ethernet service for business customers.
With Alcatel-Lucent's (News - Alert) Packet Transport Network (PTN) solution, SK Broadband will be creating a new network to transport increasing data traffic.
Officials with Alcatel-Lucent said that Packet Transport Network solution enables SK Broadband to smoothly migrate the existing circuit switched network. The SK Broadband will deploy Alcatel-Lucent's 1850 Transport Service Switch managed by its 1350 Optical Management Suite (OMS).
The Alcatel-Lucent 1850 Transport Service Switch (TSS) supports any mix of traffic, from all-circuit to all-packet, for seamless transformation to the Packet Transport Network (PTN). With these Packet Optical Transport (POT) switches, service providers can cost-effectively migrate from MSPP SDH/SONET to PTN, ensuring deterministic behavior, scalability, reliability and strong OA&M.
The 1850 TSS platforms provide converged support for Carrier Ethernet and SDH/SONET, connection-oriented support for packet services, integrated WDM/ROADM (News - Alert) for carrier-class transport, and scalable hardware-based OA&M.
"As traffic from enterprise customers is changing rapidly to data, we need to have network ready and optimized to accommodate those business Ethernet services,” said DongBum Shin, head of network planning headquarter of SK Broadband, in a statement.
“We expect that Alcatel-Lucent's Packet Transport Network solution enables us to accelerate our business-to-business growth and prepare for mid-long term network migration to all-IP," said Shin.
Rajeev Singh-Molares, president of Alcatel-Lucent Asia Pacific region, said that enterprise networking requirements and bandwidth in Korea are growing in complexity levels, and the underlying applications having increasingly stringent performance needs.
“Our new packet transport network serves as a key showcase demonstrating our commitment to SK Broadband's efforts to support the growing business-to-business data needs through a proven optic solution," he said.
