Next generation communications solutions provider Alcatel-Lucent (News
- Alert) and Latin American wireless service provider América Móvil are getting ready to deliver the longest 100G submarine cable system in the world.
The 17,500km submarine cable system spans over transoceanic distances, from the U.S. to Central America and Brazil. The next generation network system is designed for 100Gigabit per second (100G) transmission enabling América Móvil to provide international connectivity to all its subsidiaries, company officials said.
“100G technology is playing a fundamental role in scalability as operators are seeking to manage their bandwidth expansion to meet increasing demands for content-rich services and to address new applications such as data center interconnection needs,” said Philippe Dumont, president of Alcatel-Lucent Submarine Networks, in a statement.
The AMX-1 System will connect seven countries with eleven landing points: Miami and Jacksonville (United States), Barranquilla and Cartagena (Colombia), Fortaleza, Salvador & Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), Puerto Plata (Dominican Republic), Cancun (Mexico), San Juan (Puerto Rico) and Puerto Barrios (Guatemala).
“As a leader in advanced coherent technology, Alcatel-Lucent’s 100G technology for submarine cable systems sets a new benchmark for the efficient supply of high capacity systems and seamless system upgrades,” Dumont added.
The submarine cable system has the trunk capacity of over 50 Tb/s to support the demanding services and applications, such as cloud computing. The network upgrade will benefit América Móvil’s 256 million wireless subscribers and 62 million fixed lines, in addition to enhancing the company’s fixed voice, broadband and pay T.V. services.
The deployment of the 100G AMX-1 System will help América Móvil increase their return on investment so they can maximize the use of cable assets and minimize the maintenance costs.Cable route and landing surveys are complete and manufacturing of cable and repeaters is well underway. Commercial operation of the network comprising the AMX-1 System is planned to start in late 2013.
