Telefónica, a communications service provider, has selected Alcatel-Lucent (News
- Alert) to upgrade its Internet protocol (IP) networks in Argentina and the Czech Republic.
Enrique Blanco, Telefónica’s global chief technology officer said, “This collaboration with Alcatel-Lucent is part of a far-reaching network modernization effort which will give us one of the most powerful and efficient IP networks.”
The IP network upgrade will involve a powerful core network router, the Alcatel-Lucent 7950 Extensible Routing System (XRS). The deployment will provide Telefónica with a high-capacity IP network which can support service offerings such as fixed, mobile broadband and IPTV (News
- Alert).
Telefónica will benefit a lot form the new core router, as it will accommodate the immense surge in data traffic expected in the future, owing to the increase in use of smartphones, tablets, connected TVs and other devices – and other high bandwidth requiring services like video and gaming.
To keep up with the demand, network operators like Telefónica must boost their network capacities while increasing intelligence and capability.
Also, the advent of cloud-based services and personalized content requires more flexibility in these networks so that they can serve the needs of consumers and businesses optimally, said officials.
Federico Guillén, president of Alcatel-Lucent Spain and Global Account Manager for Telefónica, said, “We are gratified that Telefónica has turned to Alcatel-Lucent to play such an important role in the transformation of their IP networks around the world. With the introduction of the 7950 XRS core router, our IP portfolio offers truly best-in-class capabilities across the board, and we look forward to the opportunity to take Telefónica’s IP network to the next level.”
Telefónica will also leverage the common operating system (SR OS) from the Alcatel-Lucent router portfolio, which is a highly available, feature-rich software infrastructure. It supports a common network management system, the 5620 Service Aware (News
- Alert) Manager (SAM) that provides seamless support across the 7950 XRS family and the Service Router portfolio.
Alcatel-Lucent also announced that it will be licensing product software to the Taiwan-based manufacturer of broadband and wireless products, Askey Computer Corporation, to enable their development of products to enhance the quality and speed of 3G broadband services within homes.
