Coraid, a developer of Ethernet storage solutions, and Big Switch Networks (News - Alert), a platform-independent software-defined networking (SDN) company, recently forged a new partnership to build a networked storage solution that offers enhanced end-to-end security, dynamic flexibility and simplicity. To achieve this, the solution will leverage Big Switch Networks' Big Virtual Switch, a data center network virtualization application running on the Big Network Controller.
The two companies have already demonstrated the power of combining software-defined storage (SDS) and SDN in the storage network at VMworld earlier this year.
"The modern datacenter is going through the biggest transformation it has seen in more than a decade," said Kevin Brown, CEO of Coraid. "Datacenter architects today are taking a fundamentally different approach to building infrastructure, one that combines scale-out commodity hardware, pooling and abstraction through software, and the ability to programmatically control every aspect of the infrastructure. This is the software-defined datacenter, combining the best elements of cloud self-service and enterprise capabilities."
Coraid unveiled the industry-first software-defined storage platform, EtherCloud, in August. EtherCloud is based on technology from the company's 2011 acquisition of Yunteq, a cloud orchestration software provider, and offers enhanced business agility to datacenter architects by simplifying delivery of scale-out storage. As such, the platform allows administrators to serve up underlying storage capacity as flexible storage cloud services.
Big Switch Networks, meanwhile, recently began offering the first generally available Open SDN product suite that enables customers to quickly adopt new network applications while providing unified network intelligence, enterprise-class scalability and high availability. The suite includes Big Network Controller, a platform for network applications that uses industry standard protocols such as OpenFlow to create a common abstraction and universal data model for the underlying network data plane elements. Also part of the suite is Big Virtual Switch, which helps make the network as agile and dynamic as cloud compute resources, while enabling provisioning automation.
