With Time-Division Long-Term Evolution (TD-LTE (News - Alert)) slowly capturing the LTE market, the need for more testing technologies in this arena has emerged.
In this regard, China Mobile Research Institute (CMRI) and Aeroflex (News - Alert) Limited together have signed the Memorandum of Understanding for a co-operation covering both LTE and LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) technologies.
For those unaware, TD-LTE is a 4G mobile-telecommunications technology developed in China. IT offers asymmetric use of unpaired spectrum AND allocates separate channels for outgoing and incoming signals, emulating full-duplex transmission over a half-duplex communication link. The frequency bands used by TD-LTE in the U.S. and China are between 2.57−2.62GHz.
CMRI is the R&D institute of China Mobile (News - Alert), a mobile services provider in China. It has been conducting research in the field of TD-LTE, the Time Division Duplexing (TDD) version of LTE.
Aeroflex is a provider of high performance microelectronic components and test and measurement equipments used by companies from different arena, such as space, avionics, defense, commercial wireless communications, medical and other markets.
According to a press release, both CMRI and Aeroflex will co-operate on testing technologies for LTE and LTE-A as per the terms of the agreement. This includes testing and verification of LTE functionality and performance, as well as LTE-A key technologies such as carrier aggregation, eICIC, UL-MIMO, and more, by utilizing the Aeroflex TM500 Test Mobile and EAST500 Capacity Test System product families.
According to Aeroflex, EAST500 is a single integrated LTE test system while its TM500 Test Mobile is a family of multiple UE used for LTE development testing. The TM500 Test Mobile is ideal for infrastructure vendors and femtocell manufacturers, and can provide all the capabilities of a mobile terminal with advanced test functionality - from HSDPA through HSUPA and HSPA+ to LTE.
Nick Carter, senior product manager at Aeroflex, said in a statement, “This is an endorsement of Aeroflex’s versatility and its ability to develop products in a timely manner, based on customer requirements for the early proof of concept phase in network development and to align with CMRI’s requirement on LTE and LTE-A terminal emulation and eNode-B performance test.”
In recent news, CMRI collaborated with Agilent (News - Alert) Technologies Inc. in Beijing to initiate a collaboration that will focus on developing technology and test methods for a next-generation cloud-based radio access network, or C-RAN.
