Before getting to the Next Generation Communications features and news of this week, for those of you who may have been on vacation or have not checked in with us for a few days, hopefully you have noticed our comprehensive redesign of the community. Wewent attic to basement in implementing changes that:
- Expand the content accessible on the community
- Make reading a visually more appealing experience
- Categorize items in a way that lets you navigate more easily and more quickly as well as added access to additional featured links like GridTalk, TrackTalk and LifeTalk along with quick access to the TMC (News - Alert) resource center
We’ve been delighted by reactions to the redesign! Please send along any comments you may have on it.
The highlighted news certainly was eclectic ranging from enterprise to service provider, and from things dealing with cloud-based solution to some interesting aspects of things wireless.
Indeed, the wireless area leads us off this week with the announcement that Comtech PST Corp, has been awarded a $1.2 million contract to build RF duplexers for a major U.S. contractor. RF duplexers are a key component in advanced microwave systems supporting the U.S. military. This follows another recent announcement from a sister Comtech subsidiary, that it had new hardware and software enhancements for its Stampede FX Wan optimization products.
There was also a major deal in Africa this week, having saw the Kenyan government reveal a substantial countrywide initiative using a unique public-private partnership to build out mobile LTE-based broadband infrastructure. LTE equipment providers were Alcatel-Lucent and Nokia Siemens.
Operator partners are: the four Kenyan mobile network operators, Telkom Kenya Orange (News - Alert), Airtel, Essar Yu and Safaricom; and three tier-two network operators, MTN, KDN and Epesicom.
On the enterprise side of things, VOSS Solutions, a cloud-based enterprise communications company, announced that the SizweITGroup will be using helping VOSS rollout next generation services to its customers.
And, for those interested in content delivery networks (CDN) TMCnet Contributor Ed Silverstein reported on a Infonetics (News - Alert) Research report, “Fixed-Mobile/CDN Routing Strategies and Router Leadership: Global Service Provider Survey.” The report found that the top three drivers for deploying CDNs are:
- Providing a better quality of experience for customers
- Network optimization
- Reducing the cost and traffic load associated with delivering over-the-top (OTT) video content
We have continued to leave the old tab descriptors on our features, but they have been placed in their new respective sub-areas. You are invited to look in the new tabs for the full text of the following:

Finally, I’d like to reemphasize that the redesign provides easy access to an enhanced range of valuable resources, which now includes: the new interface to the Resource Center for access to whitepapers, videos and case studies.
