Ixia Participates in Test of Mobile Backhaul Packet Synchronization with Alcatel-Lucent
By Ed Silverstein, TMCnet Contributor
Ixia (News
- Alert) recently took part in a test of mobile backhaul packet synchronization with Alcatel-Lucent. The Alcatel-Lucent Mobile Backhaul Solution maintained “accurate phase synchronization and quality of service” – while experiencing conditions related to “extreme packet congestion and network failovers,” Ixia reported.
Ixia tested Alcatel-Lucent’s Mobile Backhaul Solution using its IxNetwork application with full IEEE 1588v2 protocol emulation. Details about the test results are available from Ixia (Hall 1, 1E47) and from Alcatel-Lucent (News
- Alert) (Hall 6, 6C23) – at the Mobile World Congress 2012 in Barcelona, Spain taking place Feb. 27 through March 1.
Regarding the tests, Manish Gulyani, vice president of Networks Product Marketing, Alcatel-Lucent, said in a company statement carried on TMCnet, "Using Ixia's test products and expertise, we demonstrated that our timing synchronization and traffic forwarding performance meet strict requirements for carrying and scaling real-time mobile broadband services over packet-based backhaul networks."
"Mobile broadband operators must validate that 1588v2 implementations perform under realistic backhaul network conditions – including failures and heavy traffic volumes," Tara Van Unen, director, market development at Ixia, added in the statement. "This test that demonstrates our leadership and expertise in testing timing provides network operators the confidence to accelerate their move to an all-Ethernet backhaul."

In a related matter, Ixia recently reported its financial results for the 4Q and the entire 2011 fiscal year. Total revenue for the 4Q of 2011 was $83.7 million, compared with $77.8 million reported for the same quarter in 2010. In addition, total revenue for the 2011 fiscal year was $308.4 million, an increase of 11 percent compared with $276.8 million reported for the 2010 fiscal year. On a GAAP basis, the company saw net income for the 4Q of 2011 of $8.9 million, compared with net income of $5.8 million for the 4Q of 2010. The company also saw GAAP net income of $22.9 million for the 2011 fiscal year, compared with $11.2 million for the 2010 fiscal year.
“Record revenue and bookings led a strong fourth quarter and finish to 2011," Atul Bhatnagar (News - Alert), Ixia's president and CEO said in the recent company statement. "Accelerated demand for our 10G and high-speed Ethernet solutions drove growth in the quarter along with higher than expected sales of LTE (News - Alert) and Wi-Fi testing solutions. We saw especially strong demand from equipment manufacturers and from customers in North America.”
The changing and increasing requirements from end users will likely expand new network technology and deployments, and also increase the demand for the company’s products, Bhatnagar said. “Looking ahead, we are encouraged by the opportunities we see in 2012,” he added.
