Telmex, Alcatel-Lucent Agree to a Deal that Will Bring Ultra-Fast Broadband to Mexico

By Nick McDonald, Contributing Writer

Telmex (News - Alert), one of Mexico’s largest Telecom companies, signed a deal last week to launch the nation’s first ultra-fast broadband network. The deal was signed with global firm Alcatel-Lucent (News - Alert) and will create one of Latin America’s largest and fastest broadband service networks.

The new network will help the country meet a growing demand for super high-speed Internet and high-bandwidth applications from its citizens. Telmex chose Alcatel-Lucent because of its very-high-speed digital subscriber line 2 network, or VDSL2 for short, according to officials.

VDSL2 is a technology that boosts the capacity of copper wire, allowing it to deliver broadband speeds of up to 100 megabits per-second – allowing Mexican citizens access to more digital and social media sites with a cleaner more stable connection. Overall, Telmex expects higher speeds, increases in bandwidth availability, and access to more multimedia from its customers.

“With our advanced broadband access technologies, the new network will allow Telmex to reliably move huge amounts of traffic and multimedia content to remote areas, with better quality signals, ultra high speeds of up to 100 megabits per second per subscriber and substantial savings in maintenance costs,” said Pierre Chaume, CEO of Alcatel-Lucent in Mexico.

Alcatel-Lucent will work closely with Telmex as its strategic supplier consulting on how the technology should be used and organized. As a global firm that provides services to enterprises and governments around the world, Alcatel-Lucent is a leader in the field of networking and communication technology products and services.

Along with one of the world’s largest R&D organizations, Bell Labs (News - Alert), Alcatel-Lucent has been responsible for multiple breakthroughs that have shaped the networking and communications industry. With operations in more than 130 countries around the world, Telmex will have a local partner that has experience in creating different networks in areas around the world. Alcatel-Lucent will offer its expertise in creating broadband networks in rural, spread-out countries like Mexico and give its citizens Internet access like never before.

A recent graduate from the University of Oregon, Nick aspires to build a career in the digital world with a focus on technology, sports, and online media.
