By Carolyn J Dawson, TMCnet Contributor
RPX Corporation has taken a licensing agreement which will allow it to offer its customers access to the global patent portfolio of Alcatel-Lucent (News
- Alert). Alcatel-Lucent’s nearly 29,000 issued patents related to a wide range of technologies like fixed line and wireless communications, semiconductors, consumer electronics, multimedia, optical, software, cloud computing, applications and network security will be accessible through this sophisticated licensing syndicate.
In a release, Ben Verwaayen (News - Alert), CEO of Alcatel-Lucent, said, “We have chosen to undertake an innovative approach to realizing the value of our world-class patent portfolio, and while retaining ownership of our patents, we seek to expand access to them for a diverse set of industries. For a breakthrough arrangement of this scale, we have decided to work with RPX, a known and respected expert in the patent market. We believe that RPX’s model encourages an environment where owners and users of intellectual property have the benefit of transparency and fair pricing. We expect to generate substantial proceeds from this arrangement.”
As compared to the conventional licensing, an extensive number of probable licensees will be able to take part in this unique licensing approach. The magnitude of the company, portfolio relevance, technology areas and other important aspects will decide the cost of acquiring permanent, general licenses under the program. The licensing program will also allow access to the pending applications from Alcatel-Lucent.
John Amster, CEO of RPX Corporation, said, “Our mission is to help our client network of more than 100 companies control and manage patent-related risk, whether through defensive patent acquisitions, direct licensing transactions among operating companies, syndicated transactions, cross-licensing agreements or other risk- mitigation solutions. This program offers clients the option to eliminate risk related to Alcatel-Lucent’s worldwide patent portfolio.”
