Qualcomm Chipset Could Revolutionize the Wireless World

By Nick McDonald, Contributing Writer

Qualcomm (News - Alert) Incorporated revealed today (Thursday) that it has successfully completed the first voice call handover from an LTE (News - Alert) mobile network to a Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA) network, using Single Radio Voice Call Continuity (SRVCC). This is a huge breakthrough in the development of voice-over-LTE (VoLTE) cellular technology, as the SRVCC feature enables an automatic switch to a WCDMA or 3G network from an LTE data network. Working with an Ericsson (News - Alert) network, Qualcomm completed this action for the first time using its Snapdragon processor on December 23, 2011.

SRVCC will be used to help powered the circuit-switched fallback technology (CSFB) that was released commercially in 2011. CSFB is what allows cellular devices to switch between an LTE data network and a 3G connection. SRVCC technology will help enable a single radio in the phone to make the switch between LTE and 3G automatically when the user makes a phone call. Also, the new SRVCC and CSFB technologies allow both the LTE and 3G connections to operate in a single chip, allowing future handsets designs to be smaller and have lower power consumption and component costs.

Qualcomm plans to demonstrate its newest technology developments at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, taking place from February 27-March 1.  Touted as one of the largest mobile tradeshows in the world, the Mobile World Congress (News - Alert) will feature the newest and greatest products from companies including Toshiba, and ViaSat.
