Managing End User Demand for Personalized Content on Multiple Devices
By Beecher Tuttle, TMCnet Contributor
In this day and age, consumers have the ability to access television and video content through a variety of different mediums. The recent introduction of a number of innovative products such as smart phones, PCs and tablet devices has enabled service providers to deliver content to users while they are at home or on-the-go.
While this flexibility appeases some individuals, the next generation of end-users has loftier demands. They want to be able to seamlessly move their multimedia content from one platform to another while maintaining the highest quality of experience. By adopting an end-to-end multi-screen solution, network service providers can allow consumers to watch and manage television and video content from any device.
With multi-screen services, users can access an on-demand movie through their PC, watch it on their tablet device and then pull it back up on their mobile phone.
A new report from Alcatel-Lucent (News - Alert) suggests that multi-screen service may be the new wave in the digital media space.
According to a comprehensive 2010 survey, more than 70 percent of the global youth market would be interested in using a multi-screen service, with 65 percent saying they would be willing to pay for it. More importantly, a total of 64 percent of respondents noted that they would stick with their current service provider if they offered them multi-screen capabilities.
To help service providers tap into this burgeoning market, generate more revenue and manage the complexity of multi-screen services, Alcatel-Lucent has rolled out a comprehensive set of solutions.
“Multi-screen is the next step after triple play and mobile entertainment where you bring [several] applications together – and this adds another level of complexity,” said Roland Mestric, Multimedia Solutions Marketing, Alcatel-Lucent.
“The network operator and the network provider will have to rely on partners that can manage this complexity, work with them and adapt to their environment in order to make these end-to-end solutions and all these elements work together to deliver the quality of experience to the end users,” he added.
By partnering with A-L, network providers can modify their existing platforms and extend their media services to additional connected devices. The company’s solutions can create value for the end-user, the content provider and the service provider.
