Balancing Technology Capabilities with Device Readiness on an LTE Network

By Susan J. Campbell, TMCnet Contributing Editor

In today's data-hungry consumer environment, the network provider must be able to provide the devices and content the consumer wants if they hope to remain viable and produce sustainable results for healthy growth. This is especially true on the LTE (News - Alert) network, yet migrating from current technology infrastructure while maintaining a quality experience for the customer can be a challenge.

In balancing technological capabilities, the network operator must be able to enhance the Quality of Service "QoS" for all users and deliver low latency. At the same time, mobile networks must make scalability a priority to ensure service is both reliable and flexible no matter how much needs may change.

Network operators can take advantage of mobile packet transport based on Alcatel-Lucent (News - Alert) META in order to leverage the same packet transport network architecture for LTE. This provides a clear evolution path to LTE for all involved, while also allowing for the co-existence of LTE with previous generations of mobile technologies. Overall, META can provide a comprehensive solution that addresses the introduction of LTE, ensuring all devices are ready to deliver the expected experience.

One important benefit META can deliver is the scalability necessary to match LTE bandwidth requirements. This is essential in delivering the QoS customers expect. After all, they don't care what is happening on the backend, as long as it supports what they want to be able to do with their device. The integration and mobile and transport layers possible through META enhance the scalability and ensure QoS is maximized.

Alcatel-Lucent can also ensure flexible support is available whether the LTE migration strategy is aggressive or conservative. The network operator has different reasons for selecting its approach. While the migration to LTE can significantly enhance the overall experience for all users, it cannot afford anything less than seamless migration to ensure breaks in connectivity or service delivery negate the benefit promised with LTE.

As a multi-technology solution, the Alcatel-Lucent META ensures the reliable transport of all-IP traffic over packet-optical, microwave, IP/MPLS and DSL/GPON transport networks. META allows advanced traffic management and processing, full separation and prioritization of different service traffic to ensure the continuity of services based on existing mobile technologies.

META ensures network operators can consolidate capital expenditures and rationalize operating expenditures, while also enjoying a more scalable, flexible and resilient and secure transport network. As a result, the operator will be able to more effectively balance technology capabilities with device readiness on an LTE network.
