Building a Telco Cloud: Realizing the Benefits from Virtualization Network Function Virtualization (NFV) and Software Defined Networking (SDN) increasingly form the centerpiece of the network evolution strategy of leading network operators worldwide. By introducing network programmability and virtualizing/"cloudifying" network functions (such as CPE, BBU, EPC, IMS, DNS, AAA, or Route Reflectors) that can run over commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) hardware typically deployed in enterprise data centers, NFV and SDN are invariably portrayed as the key instruments to lower network capital expenditures (CAPEX) and serve network traffic growth profitably. However, what is likely to be more significant is their ability to generate new revenue streams for network operators. NFV and SDN enable dynamic programming of network resources according to the real-time needs of the customer, their application and devices, and the current usage level of the network components. The resulting network agility and flexibility positions the network operator to roll out a variety of new context-specific services and penetrate new market segments with customized, granular offerings. It also creates additional value for their existing services and current customers by enabling policy-driven traffic differentiation, on-demand access to network bandwidth and valued-added services, and hence, enhanced usage-based control. Such new revenue streams make a more compelling case for the faster and wider market adoption of NFV and SDN.

While this approach continues to be a valid option, other solutions are becoming available as the data center is being completely redefined. The rapid gains in data center efficiency, the emergence of mega data centers and the impact of cloud computing, as well as the virtualization of data center architecture and Software-Defined Networking (SDN) mean that large enterprises need to consider new approaches to meet current and future DCI needs.

Bell Labs Prize Reynaert Vandevoorde
The Bell Labs Prize is a competition for innovators from participating countries around the globe that seeks to recognize proposals that 'change the game' in the field of information and communications technologies by a factor of 10, and provides selected innovators the unique opportunity to collaborate with Bell Labs researchers to help realize their vision. In 2014, professor Patrick Reynaert (KU Leuven, Belgium) win the second prize with his proposal "RF through Plastics". Professor Reynaert proposes to develop a new communication technology based on small CMOS radio interfaces that are connected through inexpensive plastic waveguides, enabling much higher speed data communications across several meters, such as inter- or intra-chassis communications, and at a far lower cost (and easier) than equivalent optical communications.
5G UF-OFDM Waveforms - Highly Optimized Radio Access for Heterogeneous Traffic
This work is done by Bell Labs, a research arm of Alcatel-Lucent. We are looking two to five years ahead. 5G is a key focus of our research. In this particular case we are proposing a highly optimized radio access solution for heterogeneous traffic. By this we mean a support for high data rate video streaming, web browsing, file uploads and downloads as well as short-packet transmissions, all within the same radio access and core network (the same frequency, radio and digital infrastructure). We believe that efficient support for short-packet transmissions will enable new services such as IoT (e.g., sensors and meters) as well mission critical applications (e.g., driverless and networked vehicles). Those should create new sources of revenue for service providers, rather than reinforcing the dumb-pipe model. Presented by Dragan Samardzija, Bell Labs.
