Serial hotel robbery suspect arrested; second suspect sought

Dec 01, 2011 (The State - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- A man suspected in several hotel robberies has been arrested in Richland County, while a second suspect in an unrelated hotel robbery is at-large.

Gregory Hampton, 24, is charged with two counts of armed robbery and two counts of kidnapping, the Richland County Sheriff's Department reported.

Hampton was arrested Nov. 27 at the Motel 6 on Nates Road after tips led to his location.

Employees of the Microtel Hotel, 1520 Barbara Drive, reported an armed robbery around 10 p.m. Nov. 18. They said a man approached the front desk, climbed over the counter and walked into the office with a pistol in hand. He demanded money, stole an iPod and cell phone, then left.

Around 7:40 p.m. Nov. 23, Econo Lodge employees at the 7700 Two Notch Road location reported an armed robbery in which a man entered the lobby with a pistol, stole money from the register and left.

Surveillance video images helped identify Hampton as a suspect.

Hampton was booked into to the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center, where center records indicate he remains this morning on $75,000 bond. In addition to the robbery and kidnapping charges, Hampton is charged with drug possession and giving false information.

In an unrelated hotel robbery, a man entered the Days Inn at 7128 Parklane Road around 8 a.m. Monday and told an employee he needed help changing a tire. The man then left, returned with a handgun and demanded money. He also took the employee's mobile phone.
